Boaties on the Waikato's east coast may want to consider checking their vessel's moorings following the big earthquake off Chile's coast today.

Currently it is not thought there is any significant threat to New Zealand from tsunami generated by the quake.

But there is the possibility of unusual tidal currents in coastal areas over the next couple of days as a result of energy released by the quake, particularly around harbours and estuaries.

“As a precaution, boaties may want to check their moorings are secure just in case any issues develop,” said Waikato civil defence group controller Scott Fowlds.

Civil defence will issue further advice as the situation warrants.
