The Waikato Civil Defence Emergency Management Group's joint committee has today announced a new full-time Group Manager/Controller.
He is Lee Hazlewood, the current emergency management team leader at the Group's Emergency Management Office (GEMO) based at Waikato Regional Council.
Currently there are three part-time Group Controllers, who take a lead role in managing civil defence emergencies in the region in co-operation with local controllers.
Mr Hazlewood's new role means that he will now combine the role of Group manager with that of full-time Group Controller. Other part-time Group Controllers will also be available to assist.
Mr Hazlewood came to Waikato Civil Defence last year from Washington where he was an emergency management specialist at Boeing.
Prior to that he had other senior emergency management and police roles in the United States and Britain.
Joint committee chairman Hugh Vercoe, the mayor of Matamata-Piako, said Mr Hazlewood's appointment was a flow on from ongoing work to further improve the Group's responsiveness to emergencies.
"Having a role that combines professional emergency management with the full-time Group Controller's job will help ensure even tighter co-ordination of the Group's response to emergencies.
"Lee has proven to be a great asset to the Group since he arrived and his new role will help us further strengthen our effectiveness and responsiveness," said Mr Vercoe.
Mr Hazlewood begins his new role tomorrow.
